OSU's Perfect Season on the Line: Can the Buckeyes Stop Iowa's Powerhouse RB Kaleb Johnson?

October 4, 2024

No. 3 Ohio State is set to face its toughest challenge yet this season as the undefeated Buckeyes host the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday in a highly anticipated Big Ten showdown.

Iowa (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) comes into this matchup fresh off a decisive victory over Rutgers, with standout running back Kaleb Johnson leading the charge. The star RB has been an absolute force on the ground, consistently breaking tackles and gaining momentum for the Hawkeyes offense. Johnson's presence in the backfield gives Iowa the perfect platform to control the tempo and dictate the pace of the game, which will undoubtedly be crucial when facing off against the high-powered offense of the Buckeyes.

Ohio State (4-0, 1-0), however, boasts one of the nation's top defenses, replete with elite talent at all levels. The Buckeyes' stingy unit has allowed just a meager 8.3 points per contest thus far, with their speedy pass rush and shutdown secondary proving almost unbeatable for opponents to date. Their toughness and tenacity will undoubtedly be put to the test against Johnson and the Hawkeyes, though.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is aware of the unique challenge Johnson presents and has been working tirelessly with his staff to devise an effective game plan to contain Iowa's star RB. Day will need his defenders to be at the top of their game and must be able to make the necessary in-game adjustments to keep Johnson and the Hawkeyes offense at bay.

If the Buckeyes can manage to limit Johnson's production and prevent him from wearing them down on the ground, OSU quarterback Kyle McCord should be able to feast on Iowa's secondary with his talented receiving corps. Ohio State's big-play ability is unmatched, and an inability by Iowa to handle the Buckeyes' aerial assault would quickly force the Hawkeyes into desperation mode.

The stakes are high in Columbus this weekend, with both teams jostling for position within the highly competitive Big Ten Conference. A victory over a top-3 team would catapult Iowa into the national spotlight, cementing their status as legitimate contenders. For Ohio State, a convincing win over the Hawkeyes would reinforce their dominance, keeping their dreams of a perfect season well and truly alive.
