PBS Uncovers Hidden History: What Islam's Founders Did in America First!

October 14, 2024

NPR's Ayesha Rascoe speaks with NPR White House correspondent Asma Khalid about "American Muslims," a new PBS series she hosts. Asma Khalid, whose vast knowledge of American politics and its components is renowned, shares her perspective on the new series that explores the extensive yet largely unknown history of Muslims in America.

The series, 'American Muslims,' which is scheduled to air soon on PBS, looks into the 500-year-old presence of Muslims in the United States. From visiting historical sites to discussing the current societal views on Islam in America, "American Muslims" brings the past, present, and future into focus. The show's main theme mirrors what many Americans never get a chance to experience: the intertwined tradition between America and Islam.

As Khalid underscores in her discussions with Rascoe, "American Muslims" covers Muslims who first set foot on American soil in the 1500s. Who they are is made apparent in a tale of settlers in what is now the United States, trying to make friends out of Native Americans and working tirelessly to convert them to their faith.

Additionally, White House correspondent Asma Khalid who found inspiration in her American and Muslim origins to undertake this historically groundbreaking research, spoke at length about her travels while researching the content of the documentary. These first-hand interactions range widely, covering experiences with early American settlers, profound conversations in mosques across America, learning stories from Muslims who have escaped civil war.

The major PBS series can help Americans readjust basic knowledge on a way of life many consider unusual due to stereotypes against the Muslim-American population in this way. The critical PBS project 'American Muslims' seeks the goal of increasing cultural awareness to people whose curiosity might ultimately prove limitless in different ways.

NPR's Ayesha Rascoe and Asma Khalid went on a detailed examination into different parts, pointing out the need to look within our society. Together, the duo will explore deeper into the unique historical place of Islam in the rich American history. This provides an exciting opportunity to uncover more truths that truly will have much needed public impact.
