The New Orleans Pelicans secured a hard-fought win against the Orlando Magic on Monday at the Smoothie King Center in NOLA, and one of the key players to watch was undoubtedly Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado.
As the clock ticked down, Alvarado found himself face-to-face with the Magic's towering center, Goga Bitadze, in a battle that would test both players to their limits. It was Alvarado, however, who would eventually emerge unscathed and triumphant, as the Pelicans mounted a comeback to clinch victory.
The Smoothie King Center, typically abuzz with the electric atmosphere that New Orleans' dedicated fans bring to every game, was on the edge of their seats as the two teams went toe-to-toe, exchanging blows and spilling blood in a grinding contest that neither side seemed willing to yield.
For their part, the Magic had managed to build a significant lead, thanks to the outstanding playmaking and sharp shooting of their backcourt duo. The Pelicans, however, were not ready to throw in the towel yet. Behind Alvarado's fiery leadership and never-say-die attitude, the New Orleans outfit mustered up the strength and the resilience to dig themselves out of their hole.
Bitadze, who stands at an incredible 6 feet 11 inches tall and boasts an impressive wingspan, was an imposing presence on the court, swatting away shots left and right like a hyperactive volleyball player at a blocking party. However, his most crucial challenge of the night came when he found himself pitted against the fearless Alvarado, who fearlessly and consistently launched himself at the giant, launching any number of three-pointer shots that either dropped through with a deadly rattle or ricocheted high off the glass in unpredictable trajectories.
And while Bitadze managed to momentarily block or alter several of Alvarado's many attempts on the night, there was one crucial play in which the wily veteran would elude, duck under, and then slip a deceptively quick three ball by the massive center's slow reaction time, making good on his promise to shoot the lights out for the Pels. New Orleans fans, delirious in triumph as Alvarado triumphantly brandished his forefinger heavenward in rejoicing the three's release, wildly brandished every symbol in their overflowing arsenal of cheering accoutrements as their love-able underdog earned his rightful exaltation – as savior for his shroud of downtrodden fans.
