Lars Eller had two goals against his former team, Evgeni Malkin had a goal and two assists, and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Montreal Canadiens 6-3 in a high-scoring matchup on Wednesday night.
The Penguins dominated the first period, scoring three goals to take an early 3-0 lead over the struggling Canadiens. The Canadiens however, refused to back down and battled back to tie the game at 3-3 in the second period.
Evgeni Malkin and the Penguins however, took control of the game and scored three more goals to secure the win. Malkin was exceptional throughout the game, showcasing his impressive skills and scoring prowess on his way to a goal and two assists.
Lars Eller, who played for the Canadiens from 2010-2016, had two goals against his former team, which gave the Penguins a much-needed boost in the game. Eller has had success against the Canadiens in the past, but this was a performance to remember.
Canadiens goalie Jake Allen, fought to keep the game within reach, but a few unfortunate breakdowns led to several costly Penguins scoring chances. Allen's shutout bid was foiled by the Penguins late in the game when two players broke in and scored on a perfectly executed counterattack.
Montreal remains winless in its last five games and looks to right its struggling ship against the New York Islanders on Friday. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, has now won two in a row, pushing their season record to a positive one. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan will look to continue this recent momentum as the Penguins clash against Atlantic Division foes in the coming days.
