The Pittsburgh Penguins, despite recent struggles, put on a promising display of hockey in their matchup against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that promise was overshadowed by the end result – a 4-3 shootout loss that raises unsettling questions about the team's defensive prowess.
There is no denying the Penguins played better. In fact, they looked more like themselves than they have in weeks. Their offense clicked, their special teams showed signs of life, and their goalie, while making some spectacular saves, was left hung out to dry by defensive miscues at critical junctures.
But that was precisely the problem. Despite improvements in many areas of their game, the Penguins were still sabotaged by mistakes they should have long since learned to avoid. They have spoken about playing smarter, about eliminating those errors that have come to haunt them time and again. But talk is cheap in professional sports, and until the Penguins can turn those lofty aspirations into tangible results, they will continue to find themselves grasping at straws in search of that elusive turning point.
And then there is the matter of what this loss says about the Penguins. Was this simply another cruel twist of fate in a season that seems to have been defined by such instances? Or was it a microcosm of something larger, a sign that the team's underlying problems run deeper than any cursory glance might suggest?
Given their current trajectory, the Penguins owe it to themselves, their fans, and their franchise's proud history to do some soul-searching. That begins with confronting the unsettling realities that have made their season such a trying test of patience. Defense, in particular, must become a priority. For all their forward-heavy dazzle, it is their leaky back end that has consistently sabotaged their best efforts.
It's a precarious situation, and one that presents both an immense challenge and an undiminished opportunity for growth. But before the Penguins can begin conceptualizing a best-case scenario – a mad dash up the standings or a Cinderella story that leaves the hockey world agog – they need to take a good hard look in the mirror. Who are they, really? What do they stand for, on and off the ice? And, most pressing of all, what will they do to put their season back on track and silence the growing din of doubt emanating from their own fanbase?
