PHILADELPHIA — In a move that has left many fans reeling, it appears that the Phillies are looking to keep their roster intact, despite their recent playoff woes. According to a report from Philly's own Dave Dombrowski, the team's brass is opting to 'run it back' with the current squad. But, we can't help but wonder: Is this a recipe for disaster or a stroke of genius?
After all, this is a team that, on paper at least, looks like a World Series contender. With a $250 million payroll, the Phillies have amassed an impressive array of talent, including some of the game's biggest stars. It's hard to argue that they're not 'really good.' But, the postseason is where teams are truly tested, and it's there that we've seen this squad falter time and time again.
Fire Topper? Maybe. Some folks are calling for the general manager's head after another disappointing playoff exit. And, it's hard to argue that changes shouldn't be made. But, Dombrowski is banking on that familiarity, that chemistry that only comes with keeping the same core group of players together. After all, these guys have grown up together, learning each other's strengths and weaknesses, developing a level of teamwork that's not easily replicable.
One thing is certain, though: this roster will be intact for years to come. So, even if it doesn't pay immediate dividends, perhaps it'll eventually amount to something in time. The future of this team is undeniably bright. There's too much talent here for them to underwhelm for years on end. Dombrowski knows this, and he's opting to stick with a core group of guys who know each other's nuances better than anyone else outside the organization. Break up the team? Why bother? It's already assembled.
