Pierre-Olivier Joseph is headed back to his old stomping grounds. The defenceman has been re-acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins in a trade with the St. Louis Blues. This move comes as a surprise to many, but it signals a big shift in the Penguins' strategy.
Joseph, who was initially drafted by the Penguins in the first round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, played for the team from 2017 to 2020. After spending two seasons with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, Joseph made his NHL debut in 2020 and quickly made an impression with five points in eight games. However, in the summer of 2020, Joseph was dealt to the Arizona Coyotes as part of a trade package that involved Phil Kessel.
Following his brief stint in Arizona, Joseph found himself with the St. Louis Blues, but after struggling to find his footing with the team, it seemed his NHL career had stalled.
But now, the defenceman is getting a second chance in Pittsburgh. With the Penguins looking to reinforce their blueline and provide support to their young core, Joseph's return could be a move in the right direction.
One of the key reasons behind this trade is the growing concern over the Penguins' defensive depth. With some of their top defencemen struggling to stay healthy and find consistency, the addition of Joseph provides a welcome boost. His familiarity with the Penguins' system and his previous experience working with head coach Mike Sullivan will undoubtedly accelerate his integration into the team.
Joseph's return also underscores the Penguins' commitment to building a strong, homegrown core. By re-acquiring one of their own draft picks, the team is demonstrating a renewed focus on developing and retaining their young talent. This approach bodes well for the Penguins' long-term prospects, as it enables them to create a culture of continuity and stability.
While there are no guarantees that Joseph will instantly hit the ground running, his re-acquisition represents a calculated risk by the Penguins. With his experience and skills on the blueline, he could be the missing piece that propels the team towards a brighter future.
