Rattler Shines Then Stalls Meet The Saints Rookie QB Who Threatens to Upend the NFL

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — There were moments when rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler had a rollicking Superdome crowd believing that he could guide the New Orleans Saints to their largest comeback victory since 2009. After a promising first half against the rival Atlanta Falcons it seemed that nothing could stop the young signal-caller who was thrust into the starting role after a preseason of hype and a season-opening week of reassurance.

Rattler who had been impressive in the Saints preseason games showed flashes of brilliance on the biggest stage in the NFC South showdown Sunday afternoon against the Falcons. With poise in the pocket a cannon-like arm and the ability to create something out of nothing the Saints faithful had visions of their team finally competing for a championship after years of disappointment.

As for Rattler who came into the league as a prospect with all the intangibles and a few doubts about his accuracy and consistency he did nothing to dissuade the naysayers during a frenetic first two quarters of play that left everyone stunned. With his unpolished edge his swagger and most importantly his unwavering confidence the Oklahoma alum threatened to take the NFL by storm with his Saints debut.

But it was a tale of two halves as the second half proved that Rattler is still very much a rookie in this league. As he stalled out repeatedly when it mattered most he now has a lot to think about in terms of sustained success. Though his unit came close to toppling the favored Falcons in a heart-stopping finish the game ultimately slipped through his grasp.

Still after an opening half that hinted at greater things for this franchise it may be enough for Rattler to have another crack at proving himself. But a harsh NFL reality set in during those final thirty minutes of game time and Rattler will be hoping that the team can regroup and work on perfecting their finish to matches.
