Respiratory Illnesses On The Rise But Govt Says No Need To Panic

January 7, 2025

The Union Health Ministry has clarified that there is no surge in respiratory illnesses in India, following reports of a spike in cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) across the country. In a virtual meeting chaired by Union Health Ministry Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava with States and Union Territories (UTs), the Ministry reviewed the present situation of respiratory illnesses and HMPV cases in India.

The meeting was convened to assess the situation and issue necessary directions to the States and UTs to strengthen their preparedness and response to the situation. According to sources, the Ministry has advised the States to strengthen awareness on HMPV and take necessary measures to prevent its spread.

HMPV is a common virus that affects people of all ages, but it is more severe in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. The virus can cause a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, including fever, cough, sore throat, and difficulty breathing.

The Ministry has also asked the States to enhance surveillance and monitoring of respiratory illnesses, including HMPV, and to ensure that all healthcare facilities are equipped to manage cases of respiratory illnesses. The Ministry has also advised the States to promote preventive measures, such as frequent handwashing, use of masks, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick.

The clarification from the Union Health Ministry comes at a time when there have been reports of a surge in respiratory illnesses in some parts of the country. However, the Ministry has emphasized that there is no need to panic and that the situation is being closely monitored.

The virtual meeting was attended by senior health officials from all States and UTs, and the Ministry has assured that all necessary support and guidance will be provided to the States to manage the situation effectively. The Ministry has also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses.
