Reunited and it Feels So Right? Former Flame Returns to Town, Leaving Heart in a Twist

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: The former love of my life, who moved off to work in Ontario years ago, is suddenly back here with a job in her field. Whoop-di-doo! She’s been calling me and we’ve been chatting lately, and it’s like no time has passed at all. We fell deeply in love back in the day, but ultimately, her job prospects won out and she made the difficult decision to relocate to Ontario for work.

I thought I was over her. I really did. I mean, I threw myself into work, spent time with friends and even dabbled in a little some online dating. But the minute she started calling again, I knew I wasn’t as done as I thought I was.

She’s not here to gloat or rub it in my face that she’s doing so well professionally. In fact, she’s making it clear that she’s missed me and has been regretful of ever leaving in the first place. She says she realizes that there’s more to life than a six-figure salary and job satisfaction, and that she values our relationship above pretty much everything.

I want to believe her. I really do. But what if this is just some case of small-town nostalgia? What if she’s just missed the charm of our little neck of the woods and I’m just a friendly face from the past? Is it smart to throw caution to the wind and give things another shot, or am I falling into the same trap that almost crushed me last time?

It’s not that I’m not flattered. I mean, who wouldn’t want a second chance with “the one” who got away? But I also know myself - I can get pretty caught up in things, especially when my emotions are on the line.

My heart is telling me to take the plunge. It wants so badly for us to work and for us to have another chance at happiness together. But my head is telling me to be cautious. Do I owe it to myself to find out, or am I just being foolish for even entertaining the idea of giving her another shot?
