Revolutionary Rice Set To Change The Game: Here's What You Need To Know
September 26, 2024
The Philippines is set to witness a revolution in the rice industry, with the recent launch of a premium rice product that could redefine the way we perceive and interact with one of the country's staple food sources. This groundbreaking innovation comes to us courtesy of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), an esteemed organization known for pushing the boundaries of rice production in the country. It's called GAPproved Rice, and its potential to shake things up in the industry cannot be overstated. In this article, we'll take a closer look at this revolutionary rice product, its significance, and what it could mean for farmers and consumers across the Philippines. The launch of GAPproved Rice was not possible without the unwavering support and dedication of farming communities, BPI, and other partners. PhilRice worked closely with local farmers to provide them with the necessary tools, training, and expertise to produce high-quality rice that adheres to international standards. At the heart of this endeavor lies a deep commitment to promoting healthier food choices and empowering local farmers to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing global market. Over a thousand farmers, extension workers, and local government units converge on the Lakbay Palay event in Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija. It was during this event that GAPproved Rice made its formal debut, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards improved rice production in the Philippines. But what makes GAPproved Rice so special, and how did it come to be? To answer this, we must delve into the essence of GAP or Good Agricultural Practices, a rigorous set of standards that PhilRice follows in evaluating and certifying rice products. In the case of GAPproved Rice, it underwent thorough assessments led by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI). The careful attention to detail and adherence to best practices resulted in a premium quality product that impresses both in terms of taste and texture. At the helm of this groundbreaking effort is Deputy Executive Director for Development at PhilRice, Karen Eloisa Barroga. In her recent statement, she said that GAPproved Rice represents a groundbreaking achievement in the quest for healthier food choices and more sustainable agricultural practices. This groundbreaking accomplishment has far-reaching implications not only for consumers but for the wider community of rice farmers who may see their efforts and endeavors be globally recognized. According to Violeta Rayos, the manager of Manggalang Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative (Marbenco), PhilRice proved to be an invaluable partner throughout the certification process. As the country's first cooperative to obtain PhilGAP certification, Marbenco can attest to the positive impact that this initiative has had on their operations. With the certification, Marbenco hopes to cement its position in the market and leverage the advantages that PhilGAP brings. Indeed, PhilRice has an immense task ahead of it - spreading the reach of GAPproved Rice across the Philippines while working tirelessly alongside its trusty partners from both government and private sectors. Despite the enormity of the task at hand, PhilRice is already witnessing its diligence reap significant rewards in the growing numbers of farmers and cooperatives in the process of pursuing their very own PhilGAP certification. Among the milestones worth mentioning is the 289 farms covering 287.4 hectares earned certification while an impressive 1,002 farms still undergo an in-depth assessment of their agricultural practices. Moreover, the cooperatives like Marbenco will have to continually strive in keeping their high rating since the first list of the nationally certified farms rose dramatically from its original ten in 2022 to its present count of twenty-three this year. As GAPproved Rice starts to hit stores and markets nationwide, this novel initiative sets the bar for all agricultural commodities. If everything runs according to plan, its nationwide release bodes incredibly well for the many people who find it increasingly difficult to gain access to nutritious meals. With their trailblazing efforts at work to dramatically improve the well-being and diets of countless Filipinos on a national scale, we now look forward to what the future may bring for rice production in the Philippines and with bated breath to what this food technology will mean for the rest of the world.
