Rockstar Co-Founder Dan Houser Poaches Top Talent From Immortals of Aveum To Create Next Gaming Masterpiece

September 16, 2024

Welcome back, Absurd Marin. In a surprise move, Dan Houser's burgeoning outfit, Absurd Ventures, has absorbed a core of developers from the now-defunct Ascendant Studios, including its CEO. This talented group of individuals, responsible for creating the innovative first-person caster Immortals of Aveum, has joined forces with Houser to form a new studio dubbed Absurd Marin.

According to a recent press release, Absurd Marin will focus on crafting a captivating, story-driven action-adventure game set in the Absurd Ventures' expansive A Better Paradise Universe. This development comes hot on the heels of Ascendant Studios' unfortunate troubles, as the release of Immortals of Aveum failed to generate the desired sales momentum, leading to more than half of its staff being laid off. The remainder of the team appears to be on an indefinite furlough.

This strategic move demonstrates that Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser has caught wind of a talented pool of developers and is keenly interested in collaborating with like-minded individuals. One key member of the Absurd Marin team is Bret Robbins, the CEO of the erstwhile Ascendant Studios. Robbins, in addition to founding Ascendant Studios, also took on a directorial role in the now-stalled Immortals of Aveum. Robbins will assume leadership as the head of Absurd Marin, closely working alongside Houser.

Expressing his anticipation for the opportunities this new collaboration has to offer, Houser emphasized his confidence in Bret Robbins' team: 'Bret has put together a highly talented, passionate team. We are very excited to have them join forces with us as we begin to work together on one of our original new titles.'

Given the immense creative potential that the Ascendant Studios ex-employees and Houser bring to the table, fans can look forward to something truly special. The 'why' behind Absurd Ventures' swift absorption of the former Ascendant Studios talent may very well be connected to their prior gaming experiences, not to mention Houser's enviable track record as a maker of 'tiny indie games' that has shaken up the entire gaming industry during his time at Rockstar Games, particularly with notable masterpieces such as Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2.

As game enthusiasts, we are naturally left eager and speculating about the emerging new frontiers of immersive storytelling within A Better Paradise Universe. If past work is any indication of what this well-greased Houser-led wagon might have in store for the audience, the trajectory appears most breathtaking indeed.
