EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Greg Roman has faced his share of criticism in his first year as the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator. Given the high expectations for the team, Roman's past successes, and the abundance of talent at his disposal, the lackluster performance of the Chargers' offense has been met with disappointment and frustration from the fans and the organization alike.
As Roman and the Chargers prepare to face the Kansas City Chiefs, there is growing pressure on the team to get back on track and start producing the kind of explosive performances that many expected this season. With a potent offense that boasts Justin Herbert at the helm, many analysts and observers believed that the Chargers had what it took to challenge for a Super Bowl berth.
However, the harsh reality is that the Chargers' offense has not been able to live up to its lofty billing this season. Despite flashes of brilliance, the team has largely struggled to produce consistently, and this has led to speculation about Roman's position as the team's play-caller.
Herbert, who is widely regarded as one of the most talented young quarterbacks in the league, has often been forced to improvise and create plays outside of the structure of the offense due to the limitations and the predictability of Roman's scheme. While this has often led to impressive scoring drives, it is not sustainable in the long term and puts undue pressure on Herbert's ability to perform under duress.
Given the current circumstances, Roman must find a way to reignite the spark that had been present in the preseason, and that witnessed the Chargers' offense looking like one of the most exciting and explosive units in the league. The upcoming game against the Chiefs represents the perfect opportunity for Roman and the Chargers' offense to prove themselves and get back on track.
In order to achieve this, Roman must first acknowledge that a heavy reliance on the running game will not be enough to propel the Chargers to victory. While the team boasts an impressive running back in Austin Ekeler, they also need to find ways to involve their pass-catchers more creatively and get them open downfield, where they can do the most damage.
Ekeler, for his part, is fully aware of the responsibility that rests on the offense to deliver. As one of the leaders of the team, he has taken it upon himself to ensure that his teammates are ready to put in the effort required to turn their fortunes around and make a push for the playoffs.
The odds are stacked against the Chargers, particularly against a team like the Chiefs, who boast an explosive offense of their own. However, Roman, Herbert, and company cannot be written off completely, and they are expected to make a strong case for themselves as they go into Sunday's matchup.
