Russell Wilson isn't ready to zoom out. As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for their first playoff game, Wilson is trying to stay focused on the present, rather than worrying about his uncertain future with the team.
Despite being one of the most successful quarterbacks in the NFL, Wilson's contract is set to expire at the end of the season, leaving many to wonder if he will return to the Steelers next year. But Wilson is trying not to let those thoughts distract him from the task at hand: winning a championship.
'I'm not thinking about that right now,' Wilson said in a recent interview. 'My focus is on this season, and on helping my team make a deep run in the playoffs. We have a great group of guys, and I'm excited to see what we can accomplish together.'
Wilson's determination to stay in the moment is admirable, given the amount of speculation surrounding his future. With several teams rumored to be interested in signing him, it's natural to wonder if he will be back in black and gold next season. But Wilson is trying to tune out the noise, and instead focus on the things that he can control.
'I've been in this league a long time, and I know how it works,' Wilson said. 'There's always going to be rumors and speculation, but I'm not going to let that get in my head. My job is to go out there and perform, and that's what I'm going to do.'
The Steelers are certainly hoping that Wilson can maintain his focus, as they prepare to face off against a tough opponent in the playoffs. With their star quarterback leading the way, they have a real shot at making a deep run in the postseason, and potentially even winning a championship.
But regardless of what happens in the playoffs, Wilson's future with the Steelers remains uncertain. The team will have to make a decision about whether to re-sign him, and if so, for how much. It's a complicated process, and one that will likely involve a lot of negotiation and discussion.
For now, though, Wilson is just trying to enjoy the ride. He's been in the playoffs many times before, but it never gets old, and he's excited to see what this season holds. As he takes the field for the Steelers' first playoff game, he'll be focused on one thing: winning.
'That's what it's all about,' Wilson said. 'That's why we play the game. We'll take it one game at a time, and see where it takes us.'
