South Africa are in a formidable position after the first day of the second Test against Pakistan, thanks to a phenomenal 235-run partnership between Ryan Rickelton and Temba Bavuma. The Proteas finished the day at 316/4, with both batsmen scoring centuries to put their team firmly in the driver's seat.
Rickelton and Bavuma's partnership was the highlight of the day, as they batted with authority and poise to take the game away from the Pakistanis. The pair came together with South Africa struggling at 81/3, but they steadied the ship and took the attack to the opposition bowlers.
The Pakistan bowlers toiled hard but were unable to make any inroads, as Rickelton and Bavuma played some exquisite shots to keep the scoreboard ticking. The partnership was eventually broken when Rickelton fell for 133, but by then the damage had been done and South Africa were in a commanding position.
Bavuma remained unbeaten on 105, and will be looking to add to his tally on the second day. The South African tailenders will be looking to bat with caution and extend their team's lead, as they aim to put Pakistan under pressure.
For Pakistan, the day was a tough one, as they struggled to make any breakthroughs. Their bowlers were inability to restrict the flow of runs, and they will need to come up with a new plan if they are to get back into the game.
The second day of the Test promises to be an exciting one, as South Africa look to build on their advantage and Pakistan attempt to stage a comeback. Will the Proteas be able to extend their lead and put the game beyond Pakistan's reach, or will the visitors find a way to fight back and make a contest of it? Only time will tell.
