The Dallas Cowboys were handed a humbling defeat at their home stadium, AT&T Stadium, by the New Orleans Saints, who romped to a 44-19 victory in what will go down as one of the darkest days for the Boys in blue.
The Saints went into the game asFavorites, but barely anyone predicted the sheer demolishing job they did on the Cowboys. It was a loss so brutal that it probably left a deep scratch on America’s Team and raised questions on their ability to be competitive with the NFL’s elite teams.
This was a matchup between two teams with totally different aspirations. The Saints are making a late push for a spot in the playoffs, while the Cowboys are aiming to clinch home-field advantage throughout the post-season.
The New Orleans Saints certainly made their presence known in Arlington this week, thanks in large part to the incredible display of team chemistry and work ethic that ultimately led to a convincing victory over a talented but off-balance Cowboys team.
Even though Dallas began their week full of momentum, cruising in at the top of their division, they found themselves immediately thrust into high pressure after an opening 19-yard reception by Michael Thomas set the tone for what was a busy and bleak afternoon for the Cowboy secondary.
At this point in the season, we all had an inkling that this year’s Cowboys squad was inconsistent. And, right now, everything feels as inconsistent as ever.
This Saints win also highlighted that, for the most part, Dallas hadn’t turned things around, instead falling into a familiar but disappointing routine of having top defensive stars rendered completely ineffective by sheer in-game strategy.
Dallas’ second straight loss this season cast doubt on whether their team’s goals are anything more than wishful thinking as the loss once more called to question the Cowboys ability to remain relevant with top-tier opponents.
This defeat felt like a big swing in momentum and something which the Cowboys probably needed to be answered with an authoritative reply to stop the bleeding. Furthermore, the score is further than anything we have witnessed at AT&T Stadium so far this year, making it that much more poignant. This result seemed to symbolize how Dallas isn’t as big of a powerhouse team as everyone, including most Cowboys supporters wanted them to be.
