At its developer conference this week, Samsung showed off a Galaxy S24 Ultra running the company’s One UI 7 well ahead of its release, confirming a few key leaks and offering some enticing first impressions. The company’s latest mobile operating system is still in the works, but it’s already making waves with its iOS-like features and exciting upgrades. So, what does One UI 7 have to offer?
For starters, the new OS brings a fresh coat of paint with subtle design tweaks, making it look and feel more polished than ever before. But don’t be fooled by its refined appearance – it’s what under the hood that has us truly excited. Multitasking has received a major overhaul, with users now able to run multiple apps simultaneously in a more seamless and intuitive way.
According to Samsung, the new multitasking system has been built from the ground up with the aim of providing a more PC-like experience on mobile devices. We saw demos of multiple apps running side-by-side, with no noticeable lag or performance issues. This could be a game-changer for productivity, allowing users to tackle tasks more efficiently and effectively.
Another notable change is the way notifications are handled in One UI 7. Samsung has taken a page out of Apple’s playbook with its new notification system, which groups notifications by app and activity. This not only cuts down on clutter but also makes it much easier to catch up on what you might have missed. Rounding off this all-new notification experience is the addition of more dynamic controls, giving you greater flexibility in customizing your alert preferences.
Battery life improvement is also one of the areas that Samsung focused on this year, with One UI 7 boasting adaptive battery management and AI-powered battery performance prediction. According to the company, the AI engine learns your usage patterns and adjusts battery life accordingly, ultimately making the battery last longer during the day.
Lastly, we got a first look at One UI 7’s new customization tools, which aim to let users put their mark on their mobile experience like never before. Samsung boasts of an 'unmatched' customization capacity through a simplified theme interface, with easily-selectable colour, font, and style combinations.
These updates might seem familiar – and some of the new features do mirror changes made by Apple in iOS. But while some may label this new update as overly derivative, we think that practical consumers will appreciate the inclusion of quality-of-life upgrades.
There’s still much more to come from the latest Samsung software – though these first impressions of One UI 7 leave us thoroughly excited about the opportunities it presents.
