Seahawks Ground Game Secret Strategy Revealed Ahead of Showdown with Rams

November 1, 2024

Coach Mike Macdonald has faith the Seattle Seahawks are going to get their ground game going, and it could not have come at a more opportune time. The Seahawks have lost four of five after a 3-0 start, and their running game has been stuck in neutral for most of the season.

Seattle ranks 27th in the NFL in rushing yards per game, averaging just 88.4 yards per contest. This inability to move the chains on the ground has put a lot of pressure on quarterback Geno Smith to perform miracles. And while Smith has been solid, he has struggled to make plays under pressure.

This lack of balance has forced the Seahawks into tough third-and-long situations, which has limited their scoring opportunities. But despite these struggles, Macdonald remains optimistic about the team's chances to turn the season around. He believes the team just needs to get back to basics and focus on executing the fundamentals of the running game.

That means sticking to their zone-blocking scheme and getting the linemen and tight ends to block the right gaps. It also means being more patient and letting the play develop, rather than trying to bounce the ball outside too quickly.

On Sunday, the Seahawks will look to implement this plan against a stingy Los Angeles Rams defense. The Rams have allowed just 90.4 yards per game on the ground, but Macdonald is confident that his team can find success if they stick to their system.

'We're going to keep running the ball, we're going to keep doing what we're doing, and we're going to get better,' Macdonald said during a press conference on Tuesday. 'I think we're close to breaking through.'

Of course, it won't be easy. The Rams boast one of the NFL's top defensive lines, with Aaron Donald, Ndamukong Suh, and Michael Brockers anchoring the interior. But Macdonald believes his linemen are up to the challenge.

'We've got some talented guys, we've got some rugged guys, and we've got some guys who can block,' he said. 'We just need to put it all together.'

On offense, the key for the Seahawks will be getting their running backs more involved in the game. They've got a talented stable of backs, led by Rashaad Penny and DeeJay Dallas. And if they can get these guys going, it could open up more opportunities for the passing game.

'When our running backs are making plays, it's a game-changer,' Macdonald said. 'It makes our offense so much more difficult to stop.'

Ultimately, the Seahawks know they face an uphill battle on Sunday against the Rams. But Macdonald's faith in his team's ground game has given them new hope. And if they can get the running game going, they might just be able to shift the season back in their favor.
