When thinking of the makings of a successful coach, a plumbing background isn't typically the first association that comes to mind. But for Shane Flanagan, his experience in the trenches has proved to be a unique ingredient in his recipe for transforming the Dragons side he now coaches.
Flanagan's vision is centered around a no-frills, hard-nosed approach to the game - a philosophy that was honed during his days as a plumber. His dream is to see his team embody the same work ethic and toughness that he adopted during his time in the trade. 'If we can be that team that's like a plumber's mentality, get in the trenches, do the hard work and get the job done, I think that's what I want this team to be,' he says.
For Flanagan, it's about creating a cohesive unit that can stand the test of time and adversity. It's a mantra that he has impressed upon his players time and time again - a call to arms to adopt a 'blue-collar' mentality and roll up their sleeves whenever the situation demands it.
This newfound sense of identity is something that Flanagan hopes will set the Dragons apart from other teams in the competition. He sees the essence of their game plan lying not in flashy attacking moves, but in the hard yards that they are willing to put in to achieve victory.
One player, in particular, has embodied the spirit that Flanagan is looking to instill in his team. According to onlookers, the player's tireless work rate and willingness to get his hands dirty has been a shining example of what Flanagan's vision is all about. 'He's the first one to put his hand up and do the tough stuff,' a teammate reveals. 'He's not afraid to get his hands dirty, and that's something that everyone in the team can learn from.'
As the season wears on, Flanagan will be looking to his players to demonstrate their own versions of this 'plumber's mentality.' With their coach leading the way, the Dragons are poised to take on the competition with a renewed sense of grit and determination - one that can only bode well for the future of the team.
