Rebecca Kimmel sat in a small room, staring at the baby photo she had just unearthed from her adoption file. Her eyes scanned the picture, trying to find any resemblance, but it was clear – this baby was not her. So who was she? The woman who stared blankly at the photo, with an uncertain expression etched on her face, was an adoptee. Rebecca Kimmel was born in South Korea and adopted by an American family as a child. Her whole life she had been curious about her biological parents and her past, but as she grew older, that curiosity became an insatiable desire to uncover the truth about her heritage.
The journey to uncovering that truth, however, was riddled with roadblocks and unexpected revelations. Rebecca was one of thousands of South Korean adoptees in the United States searching for answers about their past. They scoured government documents, pored over faded photographs, and delved into DNA testing – all in the hope of finding any hint about their families or their early years. But for Rebecca, nothing could prepare her for the shocking discovery that awaited her.
As she sifted through her adoption file, Rebecca noticed discrepancies in the information provided about her biological mother. There were conflicting statements about her age and the circumstances of the adoption. It was then that she stumbled upon the baby photo that made her question everything. If the baby in the picture was not her, who was it, and why did the photo find its way into her adoption file?
Rebecca's search for answers sent her down a labyrinthine path of government bureaucracy, endless documents, and endless questions. Her experience is not an isolated one. Many adoptees in the United States also face the daunting task of piecing together fragmented information to understand their past.
Korean adoptees, in particular, face significant hurdles as the adoption system in South Korea has historically been opaque. In the 1960s and 1970s, Korea started encouraging international adoptions as a means of addressing the post-war issue of homelessness and the social stigma surrounding unwed mothers. Despite these well-intentioned efforts, many records were poorly documented, giving adoptees today almost nothing to hold on to as they set out on their journey of self-discovery.
As Rebecca continued to unravel the mystery, she came across many painful revelations, confronting the brutal truths that the adoption system had inadvertently buried. The more she uncovered about her own history, the more she encountered the stark realities many adoptees face. They were left grappling with issues of identity and heritage as questions about their blood relatives still linger.
