Pirelli’s latest endeavour to enhance the world of Formula 1 by introducing a softer compound has hit a snag. The tyre giant, F1’s official tyre supplier, has been working on an extra soft compound to be added to its range for select street circuits in the 2025 season. However, the initial results have been less than promising, with the tyre only managing to last for “part of a lap” during Tuesday’s tyre test in Abu Dhabi.
As street circuits often present unique challenges to both drivers and tyre manufacturers alike, Pirelli had hoped this new compound would provide better performance and potentially unlock new strategic avenues for teams. Unfortunately, the tyres’ performance during the test cast a shadow over those aspirations.
The Abu Dhabi test had been eagerly anticipated as a crucial milestone for Pirelli to gauge the effectiveness of its latest compound. With teams joining forces to put the tyres through their paces, the three-day test has provided invaluable feedback for the tyre manufacturers as they fine-tune their products for the upcoming F1 season.
The introduction of an extra soft compound was expected to bridge the gap between Pirelli’s existing C5 and C4 compounds, providing an intermediary solution for tracks requiring a balance between grip and durability. Despite the setback, Pirelli is unlikely to abandon its pursuit of a softer compound, given the potential strategic implications for F1 teams.
With further refinements likely to be on the cards, Pirelli will be working around the clock to address the drawbacks that have hindered the tyre’s performance. A revised version may be required to meet the high standards expected by F1 teams and drivers. The ongoing development of the C6 compound is sure to be one of the major storylines as the tyres continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the thrill of the F1 racing.
