The Philadelphia Flyers went into this offseason with a number of needs, but limited salary cap space restricted the degree to which the team could address those needs.
With limited wiggle room under the cap, general manager< Last Name> had to get creative in order to bring in the necessary pieces to help turn the Flyers into a playoff contender.
One of the Flyers biggest offseason needs was on defense, where the team had been inconsistent and struggled to find a reliable top four. Despite being linked to several high-profile defensemen, the Flyers were unable to land the big fish they were hoping for.
Instead, the Flyers took a more understated approach, acquiring a couple of lower-profile defensemen who could provide some much-needed depth and stability to the blue line. It was a move that didn shy garner much attention at the time, but it could end up paying off in a big way for the Flyers.
Another area where the Flyers needed to improve was in goal, where the team had struggled to find consistent goaltending in recent years. With the salary cap being what it is, the Flyers didn shy have the resources to bring in a high-end starter, so they opted for a more conservative approach.
The Flyers signed a veteran goalie who has a proven track record as a reliable backup, but who also has the skills and experience to potentially take on a bigger role. It was a move that wasn shy flashy, but it was a necessary one for a team that has been inconsistent in net for far too long.
While the Flyers may not have made the biggest splash in free agency, they quietly addressed a couple of their biggest needs in a creative and cost-effective way. It remains to be seen how these moves will play out, but on paper, the Flyers look like a more well-rounded team than they did just a few short months ago.
