A Southern California couple has been found guilty of operating a business that assisted pregnant Chinese women in traveling to the United States, with the intention of giving birth to babies who would automatically become US citizens.
The scheme, which was uncovered by authorities, revealed that the couple had been running a lucrative business, catering to expectant mothers from China who were willing to pay top dollar for the opportunity to give birth on US soil.
According to reports, the couple's business would help the pregnant women obtain visas and make travel arrangements to the United States, often without disclosing their true intentions for traveling to the country.
The wives-to-be would then stay in apartments or homes arranged by the couple, where they would receive medical care and assistance, until they gave birth.
The appeal of giving birth in the United States lies in the fact that, under US law, any child born on American soil is automatically granted citizenship. This has led to a growing trend of so-called 'birth tourism,' where expectant mothers from around the world travel to the US to give birth, in the hopes of securing US citizenship for their child.
However, the scheme run by the California couple was deemed to be operating outside the bounds of the law, as it was found to be deliberately misleading US immigration officials about the true intentions of the pregnant women.
The couple's conviction has sparked renewed debate about the issue of birth tourism, with some arguing that it is a legitimate practice that allows for the creation of new American citizens, while others claim that it is an abuse of the US immigration system.
As the couple awaits sentencing, authorities have promised to continue cracking down on similar schemes, in an effort to protect the integrity of the US immigration system.
