SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico man, who opened fire during a protest against a statue of a Spanish conquistador, pleaded no contest to reduced charges of aggravated battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Monday.
The shooting incident occurred during a tumultuous protest that took place in response to the abandoned plans to erect a statue of Don Juan de Oñate, a polarizing figure in New Mexico history. While some see him as a founding figure and a pioneering force behind the state's early development, others view him as a brutal colonizer responsible for numerous atrocities, including the massacre of hundreds of Native Americans in the late 16th century.
The Native American activist, who was injured in the shooting, was among the many protesters that had gathered to demonstrate against the planned statue. The scene quickly turned violent when the defendant, whose identity has not been released, pulled out a gun and began firing at the crowd.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene, with many scrambling to take cover as the shots rang out. The Native American activist, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the defendant was taken into custody by local authorities and charged with a string of serious offenses. However, as part of a plea deal, the charges were reduced to aggravated battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Under the terms of the agreement, the defendant agreed to plead no contest to the reduced charges, which could result in a significantly reduced sentence. While the exact terms of the deal were not disclosed, experts speculate that the defendant may be facing several years in prison, although the ultimate decision rests in the hands of the presiding judge.
The shooting incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for greater accountability. Many have expressed frustration and disappointment with the fact that the charges were reduced, arguing that the defendant should have faced more severe consequences for his actions.
Native American activists, in particular, have voiced their discontent with the outcome, pointing to a long history of systemic injustices and racism against their communities. They argue that the shooting was a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by Native Americans and the need for greater recognition and protection of their rights.
As the case comes to a close, many are left to wonder whether justice has been truly served. While the defendant will face consequences for his actions, the shooting incident has left a deep scar on the community, one that will likely take a long time to heal.
