Another week in the NFL has come and gone, and with it, we saw our fair share of incredible moments, heartbreaking losses, and some downright sloppy play, particularly on special teams. In this week's On Football analysis, we're diving into the biggest topics from Week 12 and exploring what it means for teams moving forward.
Special teams units are often the unsung heroes of the NFL. They're the ones who fly under the radar, putting it all on the line every time they step onto the field, with the hope of making a game-changing play. But sometimes, those same units can be the ones that let their teams down in crucial situations.
Week 12 saw its fair share of special teams blunders, with several teams suffering as a result of poor decision-making and sloppy execution. Some of the most egregious errors came in the form of muffed punts, blocked kicks, and poorly timed penalties. These mistakes not only swing the momentum in favor of the opposing team but also have a way of sucking the energy out of the stands and the players on the field.
One team that struggled mightily on special teams in Week 12 was the Denver Broncos. The Broncos' special teams unit entered the week ranked near the bottom of the league in several key categories, and they did little to shake that reputation during their Week 12 matchup against the Buffalo Bills. A botched punt return and a missed field goal were just a couple of the lowlights for the Broncos' special teams unit, which has been a liability for the team all season long.
Another team that had its fair share of struggles on special teams was the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys' usually reliable kicker, Brett Maher, had a rare off day, missing two field goals, including one in the closing minutes that would have given the Cowboys a late lead. Instead, the Cowboys were forced to settle for a tie, a result that could come back to haunt them in the ultra-competitive NFC East.
Of course, special teams woes weren't the only story of Week 12. We also saw some incredible individual performances, as players like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes continued to cement their status as two of the best in the league. We saw teams like the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens continue to dominate, thanks to their stout defenses and explosive offenses.
As the season wears on and we get closer to the playoffs, it's performances like these – the good, the bad, and the ugly – that will ultimately determine which teams will be competing for the right to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. For now, we'll continue to break it down, analyzing the biggest topics and storylines from around the league, on On Football.
