While webtoons continue to gain popularity in countries such as China and the United States, their appeal is surprisingly waning in South Korea, the country where the webtoon industry first originated. This decline is indeed an interesting phenomenon, especially given the significant financial investment South Korea's government has made in recent years to boost its creative content and entertainment industries.
In January, the South Korean Culture Ministry announced that it would invest approximately 4 billion won (about $3.3 million in USD) to promote and grow the country's webtoon industry, particularly targeting international markets. This was part of a broader strategy to foster a highly competitive and diverse K-culture scene.
However, despite this support, Korean readers have shown decreasing interest in domestic webtoons, even as international markets show eager appetite. Many experts argue that a lack of engagement from domestic readers stems from a multitude of factors. For example, domestic readers already saturated with K-dramas and movies now crave more variety and diversity, which seems to be absent in many recent webtoon releases.
Another potential reason for this decline could be the growing preference for international content. Young people are turning to services that offer a vast library of popular international content.
Meanwhile, with various streaming services competing for valuable subscribers, domestic producers are instead creating original content that is reminiscent of past Korean hits, struggling to offer distinct stories with catchy plots. Rather, they follow the long-lasting genre clichés and predictable storylines that ultimately fail to grab the attention of viewers already spoiled for choice.
Moreover, creators and developers of webtoons have not been able to keep up with contemporary tastes and reader expectations, often leaving readers unmoved by the repetitive and plain storylines, or limited artistry.
In light of this downward trend in reader engagement, some industry experts and professionals suggest adopting bold strategies. Successful webtoons need a full range of creative talent, including writers and artists working in close collaboration to create complex web novels with sophisticated themes.
Furthermore, to turn this global market into significant profits, South Korea must offer new storylines, relatable characters, rich subplots and deep character analysis full of humanity – with complex story-boards backed by smooth, vibrant, high-quality art.
By widening the array of original content and expanding cultural visions, South Korea's creative industries would hopefully witness significant positive changes, to keep influencing globally through captivating plot narratives from seasoned industry artists and to thrive across lucrative global web platforms.
This would strengthen connections and relationships between Asian countries by their ever-increasing influential platforms - encouraging collaborative creative participation between major countries and their communities from multiple backgrounds, fostering robust exchange, education, and unique business partnerships between creatives.
