There were moments when rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler had a rollicking Superdome crowd believing he could guide the New Orleans Saints back from a 17-point deficit. Rattler made his NFL debut in place of the injured Derek Carr on Sunday, and despite some initial jitters, the 21-year-old Oklahoma product showed flashes of brilliance that left fans and analysts alike wondering if he could lead the team to a stunning comeback.
Rattler's poise and pocket presence were impressive, especially considering the circumstances. The young signal-caller had only a week of first-team reps under his belt, and it's not often that a quarterback makes their debut against a stingy defense like the one the Saints faced on Sunday. However, Rattler's ability to diagnose coverages and deliver accurate passes from the pocket kept the Saints in the game well into the fourth quarter.
But despite his best efforts, Rattler's promising start ultimately ended in disappointment. A combination of factors - including a few costly turnovers, some questionable play-calling, and a dominant performance by the opposing team's defense - conspired to thwart the Saints' comeback bid and leave Rattler with a loss in his first NFL start.
So what went wrong for Rattler and the Saints? One major issue was the team's inability to generate consistent pressure on the opposing quarterback. The Saints' vaunted pass-rush, which had been so effective in previous weeks, was all but invisible on Sunday, allowing the opposing quarterback to sit comfortably in the pocket and pick apart the defense with ease.
Another problem was Rattler's tendency to hold onto the ball for too long. In several instances, the rookie quarterback failed to recognize coverage and took sacks as a result. This not only stalled drives but also put the Saints in tough situations, forcing them toconvert on long third downs or punt the ball away.
Additionally, the Saints' play-calling was sometimes puzzling, particularly in the second half. The team's coaching staff seemed content to abandon the run and rely on Rattler's arm to bail them out, even though the opposing defense was clearly geared up to stop the pass. This limited the Saints' ability to control the clock and maintain possession, allowing the opposing team to dictate the tempo and ultimately secure the victory.
Despite the loss, Rattler's debut was not without its bright spots. The young quarterback showed plenty of upside, and his ability to extend plays with his legs and make accurate throws on the move were particularly impressive. If the Saints can build upon these positives and address some of the issues that arose on Sunday, they may have something special on their hands in Rattler.
