Sri Lanka have set their eyes firmly on the T20 World Cup – an event they will co-host with India in 2026, captain Charith Asalanka said. For a team that has weathered stormy waters in ICC events over the last decade, making its last semi-final appearance a distant ten years ago, the prospect of a Championship win is not only real but tantalizing.

The revelation was made by the captain while speaking to media representatives in Dambulla. Asalanka is positive that the current side can rewrite history and take the coveted trophy home in the 2026 T20 World Cup. With just three years to go for the event, Sri Lanka has already begun to put its ducks in a row.

The Sri Lankan team that will face the challenge of the 2026 T20 World Cup will be trained under a new set of experienced coaches. According to sources, the team is expected to hone its skills under specialized trainers, making sure that every team member is in top physical condition. The initiative comes on the heels of the positive performance of the current team in the last season.

Even though the last decade has not been the best for the Sri Lankan team in the ICC events, the team still commands a strong following in the cricket world. The ardent fans have high expectations from their favorite team following its stirring performance in the last season, and their hopes hang on the T20 Championship.

The captain also hinted at the current focus on enhancing batting, which many believe is the team’s Achilles heel. In addition to this, there will be a special emphasis on increasing the chances of staying on the field to finish the matches successfully. Experience of the batsmen and the potential of the beginners will also be put to good use. It is also rumored that the coaching panel may consider roping in some successful T20 players as consultants.

There are also high hopes from Asalanka, whose performance in the last T20 season was quite impressive. Such expectations necessitate a lot of responsibility from Asalanka and his team. With international matches just a whisker away, Asalanka's team is racing against time to sharpen its skills. Nonetheless, given the new enthusiasm in the T20 squad, there is hope for Sri Lanka’s success in the upcoming championship.
