Jordan Binnington shone brightly in goal as the St. Louis Blues spoiled the return of their former coach Craig Berube with a convincing 5-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Scotiabank Arena on Thursday night.
Berube, who was fired by the Blues in December, was hoping for a winning start to his new chapter in Toronto. However, it was his former team that grabbed the spotlight with a dominant performance led by Binnington’s outstanding 40-save display.
Dylan Holloway was another star of the show, scoring two goals as the Blues notched their fifth consecutive win over the Maple Leafs. Toronto’s only consolation came in the form of a third-period goal from a talented young forward.
St. Louis opened the scoring in the first period when a miscommunication between Toronto’s defense led to a turnover, and the Blues swiftly capitalized. A swift pass found Holloway, who released a low, precise shot that sailed past Toronto’s goalie.
The Toronto team tried hard to find an equalizer but struggled to break down the solid St. Louis defense, marshaled by the incomparable Binnington. His confidence inspired the entire team, which started to assert its authority in the second period.
A combination of stifling defense and lack of creativity in the attacking third spelled trouble for Toronto. After failing to capitalize on several scoring opportunities, the Blues then extended their lead to 3-0 with another well-orchestrated attack that culminated in a precise shot hitting the net.
Toronto’s players started to lose their composure, and the situation took a turn for the worse when a misplaced pass led to yet another St. Louis goal. As Toronto’s defense began to disintegrate, the Blues bagged their fifth goal of the night, leaving the home team staring at a four-goal deficit.
A late consolation goal did little to alleviate Toronto’s suffering in this tough defeat. “Our guys played pretty well tonight. I think they were excited to play against their former coach,” St. Louis coach said in the post-game press conference.
