For a long time, it was believed that the Earth had only one natural satellite, the Moon. However, a recent WION podcast has shed light on a fascinating discovery that suggests the Earth might have had several tiny hidden moons in the past.
According to the podcast, these mini-moons were not like the large Moon we know today. Instead, they were small, irregularly-shaped objects that were caught in the Earth's gravitational pull.
But where did these tiny moons come from? Scientists believe that they were formed from pieces of asteroids or comets that broke apart as they passed close to the Earth. Some of these pieces were then captured by the Earth's gravity, becoming mini-moons.
One of the main reasons why these mini-moons went unnoticed for so long is because they were extremely small. Some were only about a meter or two in diameter, while others were even smaller.
Despite their size, these mini-moons were still capable of having a significant impact on the Earth. For example, they could have affected the planet's rotation and orbit, and might have even played a role in the formation of some of the Earth's oceans.
Unfortunately, the mini-moons did not last long. They were eventually pulled apart by the Earth's gravitational forces, or collided with other objects in the solar system.
Today, the Earth is left with only one natural satellite, the Moon. However, the discovery of the mini-moons is a fascinating reminder of the complex and dynamic history of our planet.
As scientists continue to study the Earth and its place in the universe, it's clear that there's still so much to learn about our planet and its place in the cosmos. Who knows what other secrets are waiting to be uncovered?
