T20 World Cup Bombshell - The Real Reason Asha Sobhana Was Abandoned in India's Playing XI

October 14, 2024

India are facing Australia in a must-win clash in Group A at the T20 World Cup 2024 in Sharjah. The Women in Blue are looking to stun the defending champions in their final league stage game as a slip-up can mean an early exit for the Indian team.

The stakes are high with India struggling to find consistency in the tournament. They have been hit hard by injuries and poor form, and the latest team news has raised a few eyebrows. One of the most surprising decisions was to leave out left-arm spinner Asha Sobhana from the playing XI for the all-important Australia game.

Sobhana, who was an active member of the team in their previous games, was expected to make the cut for the must-win clash. However, she was overlooked in favor of other players, sparking widespread debate on social media. Fans are disappointed with the team management for dropping a talented player like Sobhana.

Experts believe that Sobhana was left out due to the team management’s decision to change the playing XI based on the conditions and the opposition. India might have wanted to be more aggressive against Australia, who have traditionally struggled against pacers. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team would have looked at the statistics and decided to go with a pacer-friendly attack to try and limit the opposition.

But why was Sobhana dropped and not any other bowler? Sobhana has been in decent form, picking up three wickets in the last two games. She has a decent economy rate, but her numbers might not be on par with her fellow spinners.

India’s team management might have decided to look at the brighter picture in the bigger scheme of things. Dropping Sobhana might have been seen as the better option for the particular opposition and conditions on the day. However, only time will tell if this strategy will backfire.

Regarding the reasons behind Sobhana’s axe from the playing XI, a team source has reportedly said that the team wanted to play with more batting depth, and thus decided to give a bowler’s slot to an all-rounder. When asked about the injury status of the regular player, the source said that she was fine but did not elaborate further on whether she can play or not.

Despite fans expressing disappointment over the omission of Asha Sobhana, they have also sent their best wishes to the team for the crucial fixture against Australia. Fans believe that the final XI should have been decided using the coach’s full knowledge.
