Telcos Ditch Diesel for Solar as N56.24 Billion Monthly Energy Bills Drain Profits

September 25, 2024

As the cost of energy continues to soar in Nigeria, telecommunication companies are increasingly turning to renewable energy sources as a means of reducing their operational expenses. In a move to cut down on their massive energy bills, telcos are now exploring the use of solar power to energize their operations across the country.

The new development is a direct response to the recent surge in the cost of diesel, which has taken a huge toll on the companies' finances. With monthly energy bills hitting a staggering N56.24 billion, the telcos are under immense pressure to find alternative sources of energy that are not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective.

According to industry sources, the high cost of diesel has been a major challenge for telcos in the country, with many of them struggling to stay afloat amidst rising operational expenses. The telcos claim that the high cost of energy is not only threatening their profitability but also their ability to invest in network expansion and upgrade.

In a bid to reduce their reliance on diesel and the accompanying huge energy bills, telcos are now exploring the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. The initiative, which is already gaining traction in some parts of the country, is expected to save the telcos a substantial amount of money in the long run.

Experts in the industry have hailed the move as a step in the right direction, saying that the use of renewable energy sources is the way forward for telcos. With the cost of renewable energy technologies decreasing over the years, telcos can now afford to invest in these technologies, which are expected to reduce their operational expenses in the long run.

While the move by telcos to adopt renewable energy sources is a welcome development, experts have warned that it will require significant investment. The telcos will need to invest in the purchase of renewable energy equipment, such as solar panels and inverters, and also in the training of their personnel to manage and maintain the new systems.

Despite the challenges, telcos are optimistic about the prospect of reducing their energy bills and improving their bottom line through the use of renewable energy sources. As the industry continues to evolve, one thing is clear: telcos can no longer afford to ignore the benefits of renewable energy.
