Longhorns Roar at Home to Rout Arkansas-Pine Bluff by Unprecedented Margin
Austin, Texas - The University of Texas Longhorns lived up to their lofty expectations once again on Sunday afternoon when they routed the visiting Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions 121-57 in an electric display of sheer power and athletic prowess. Behind an explosive team-wide performance and led by a breakout 20-point effort off the bench from freshman sensation Nic Codie, the Longhorns handed the hapless Golden Lions their worst loss of the young season by an unprecedented 64-point margin.
With this lopsided victory, the Longhorns improve to 9-2 on the season, reiterating their commitment to excellence and upholding their mantle as a rising force in NCAA basketball. On the other hand, the Golden Lions dropped their fifth consecutive contest, slumping to a meager 1-9 record on the year.
Codie, an electric freshman who has turned heads with his blazing speed and dynamite quickness on the court, registered career-high numbers in points (20) while feeding off an energized Longhorns' bench. Providing much-needed firepower off the bench, the versatile 6'2" combination guard led the Longhorns in scoring and served as one of six Texas players who tallied double-digit scoring performances in the dismantling.
This commanding collective effort seemed relatively effortless, as Texas's swarming defense led to countless scoring opportunities on the fast break and stifled any attempt by the Golden Lions at mounting a serious challenge. Displaying the same swashbuckling swagger that has defined their exciting brand of basketball this season, the high-scoring Longhorns wasted little time making their intentions clear against the defensively-challenged visitors.
As good as Nic Codie was, he received ample support from standout teammates who starred alongside him in this laugher. Despite displaying an impressive performance that illuminated all the good things Texas can expect from their freshman phenom, Codie indicated afterward that the rout was a commendable team effort.
“All I had to do was trust my training and trust my guys that they were going to make the right play,” Codie beamed. “That’s what happened tonight. Trust was huge out there tonight and that's how it got out of hand early.”
With their sights now firmly set on creating lasting memories during their highly anticipated conference campaign, head coach Chris Beard commended his charges on “a one-of-a-kind team win” that “takes all shapes and sizes to fulfill.” According to Beard, who continues to extol the growth potential of his team despite all the triumphant talk surrounding his budding Longhorns power
