Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death globally, claiming millions of lives each year. While many people associate heart disease with chest pain, there are several lesser-known signs that could be indicative of a potential killer condition.
Most individuals are aware of the common indicators, such as a heart attack or high blood pressure, but there are three often-overlooked warning signs that could save a life if recognized promptly.
One of the lesser-known warning signs is discoloration of the legs, particularly in the feet and ankles. Discoloration in this region may be a sign of Peripheral artery disease, where narrowed arteries restrict blood flow to the lower extremities. Discoloration may appear as blue-ish or purple-ish in color, particularly after a period of prolonged inactivity.
Another often-missed indicator is swelling in the feet and ankles. This might seem like an innocent condition, typically associated with an excessively salt-rich diet or dehydration. However, persistent swelling could be an indication of conditions like Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). CHF is a medical condition where the heart cannot adequately circulate blood throughout the body, causing liquid accumulation in the limbs and torso.
Similarly, changes in the fingernails can often provide insight into the presence of an underlying heart condition. For example, Blue or Purple fingernails may be an indication that there is insufficient oxygen supply to the body tissues - often a sign of obstructed peripheral arteries or circulatory system.
With an estimated 18.2 million adults worldwide diagnosed with a heart condition, detecting potential precursors like these lesser-known signs can save lives. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized that early recognition and prompt medical attention can greatly boost survival chances and minimize cardiac disease complications.
