It looks like the good old days of spooling through fuzzy VHS tapes are making a comeback, albeit for a very limited time, and only for the bravest of horror fans. 20th Century Studios has announced that they will be releasing their latest Alien movie installment, Alien: Romulus, on the retro format that many thought was relegated to the dustbin of history.
Yes, you read that right - VHS, the once-ubiquitous but now largely obsolete video cassette format, is being resurrected for this special release. For those too young to remember, VHS tapes were the precursor to DVDs, Blu-rays, and digital downloads. Back in the 80s and 90s, people used to spend hours recording movies and TV shows on these humble cassettes, often resulting in a cluttered mess of tangled cables, crumpled up labels, and disappointing playback quality.
Given the reputation VHS had for poor video quality and its tendency to get jammed in video players, it's hard to understand why 20th Century Studios would choose to revive this medium. The only possible explanation is that they are going for a nostalgic feel, appealing to die-hard horror fans who have been eagerly awaiting the next Alien movie installment.
If this were a marketing gimmick for a zombie movie, we could almost understand the reasoning behind releasing a movie on a medium that's long been left in the graveyard of technology. Zombies, after all, feed on the flesh of the living, making the dated VHS format a fitting metaphor for their ability to resurrect and destroy the world as we know it.
However, as Alien: Romulus is a sci-fi horror movie that focuses on the fear of extraterrestrial beings rather than zombies, the decision to release it on VHS remains baffling. Are 20th Century Studios trying to prove a point? Are they trolling fans or genuinely attempting to bring back a piece of nostalgia?
Regardless of the reason, horror fans who want to experience Alien: Romulus on the bygone VHS format will have to be quick on their feet - we suspect this limited release won't be available for long. As to whether VHS will make a genuine comeback or remain a fleeting memory of the past remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, though: fans will have a chance to experience their favorite franchise on a retro format like no other.
