A couple of times, we’ve asked crucial questions like “Am I weird for putting a smart speaker in my bathroom,” and “Do you use your smartphone in the shower?” However, after living with one of my roommates for five years, I have a new question: “Is it weird to use your laptop on the toilet?” My roommate seems to think it’s completely normal to spend an hour or more on the toilet, laptop in hand, browsing through their favorite websites or catching up on some work.
It turns out my roommate isn’t the only one who thinks this is okay. A recent survey found that a surprising number of people use their laptops on the toilet, often for extended periods. The survey revealed that people use their laptops on the toilet for a variety of reasons, including to stay entertained, do some work, or even browse social media.
This got me thinking: Is using a laptop on the toilet actually weird, or is it just a sign of our increasingly screen-obsessed culture? Are we so addicted to our screens that we can’t even take a few minutes to do our business in peace? Or is it just a matter of convenience and wanting to stay connected at all times?
One of the main arguments against using a laptop on the toilet is that it’s just plain unsanitary. Think about it: You’re sitting on a toilet, handling a device that you’ll later use to eat, sleep, and do countless other things that don’t involve waste. It’s a petri dish for bacteria and other microorganisms, and the thought of spreading these germs to other parts of your body is enough to give you the heebie-jeebies.
On the other hand, using a laptop on the toilet can be seen as a form of self-care. For many people, taking a few minutes to themselves to scroll through their phone or catch up on some work is a way to relax and unwind. In a world that’s increasingly fast-paced and stressful, taking a few minutes to ourselves can be just what the doctor ordered.
So what do you think? Is using a laptop on the toilet weird, or is it just a sign of our increasingly screen-obsessed culture? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
