Pole dancing has long been misunderstood as an activity that is strictly sensual or erotic. However, this form of expression has roots in various cultures and has been a way for people to express themselves through dance and movement for centuries.
In recent years, pole dancing has gained popularity as a form of fitness and self-expression. Many people, including those who do not consider themselves 'dancers' by profession or hobby, have been drawn to the activity due to its physical and mental health benefits. Despite its growing popularity, pole dancing is still often associated with the sex industry, and many people view it as a risqué or even degrading activity.
However, the origins and meaning of pole dancing are far more complex than this. The activity has its roots in ancient cultures, including India, China, and Africa, where dance and acrobatics were used to tell stories and convey emotions. In the 1920s and 1930s, pole dancing began to be performed in circuses and sideshows in the United States and Europe, where it was often seen as a form of entertainment and spectacle.
It wasn't until the 1980s that pole dancing began to be associated with the sex industry. The activity was adopted by strip clubs and exotic dancers as a way to add variety and sensuality to their performances. As a result, pole dancing became linked to the objectification and commodification of women's bodies.
But this is only part of the story. In reality, pole dancing is a multifaceted activity that can be adapted to suit the needs and goals of the individual practitioner. Just like any other form of dance or movement, pole dancing can be sensual or not, depending on the context and the intentions of the dancer. A person can choose to incorporate sensual or erotic movements into their pole dancing routine, or they can focus on the physical and emotional benefits of the activity without any sensual undertones.
One way to think about it is to consider other forms of dance or movement. For example, contemporary or ballet dancing can also be sensual or expressive, but we don't necessarily view these forms of dance as inherently erotic or degrading. Similarly, someone can choose to do gymnastics or rock climbing in a way that is sensual or exciting, or they can focus on the physical challenge and sense of accomplishment that comes with these activities.
The author of this article recently posted a photo of herself doing a complicated pose on the pole. She was proud of what she had accomplished, especially since she had only been practicing pole dancing for less than a year. But when the photo was met with comments and reactions that focused on the sensual or erotic aspects of the activity, she realized that there was still much to be done in terms of educating people about the true nature of pole dancing.
By understanding and respecting the roots of pole dancing in various cultures and its historical context, we can begin to shift our perceptions and appreciate the activity for what it truly is – a form of self-expression and movement that has the power to transform and empower us, regardless of whether or not we choose to be sensual about it.
