It has been a while since Indian cricket fans have seen their beloved players, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, take the field in a domestic match. As it turns out, the last time these cricketing stars played in a domestic game was years ago, during a time when the Indian cricket team was still taking shape under the guidance of a different set of coaches and captains.
For Virat Kohli, his last domestic match dates back to November 2012, a time when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister of India and the world was a very different place. Shubman Gill, the talented young opener who is now making waves in international cricket, was still in school, trying to make a name for himself in the junior cricketing circles.
Kohli, who has been leading the Indian Test team for many years now, has been an integral part of the national setup for almost a decade. Despite his numerous attempts to take a break and rejuvenate himself, the 33-year-old has been unable to find the time to play in a domestic game, owing to his commitments with the Indian team and the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, last played a domestic match for Mumbai in September 2016. The right-handed batsman, who has been in phenomenal form in recent times, has been an important member of the Mumbai team over the years but has not been able to participate in a domestic game due to his busy international schedule.
The lack of participation from top players like Kohli and Rohit in domestic cricket has been a topic of debate among cricket enthusiasts, with many arguing that it hampers the growth of young talents in the country. While it is true that the presence of big-name players can be a huge draw for fans and can also serve as an inspiration for young cricketers, the current system has not been able to accommodate the schedules of these players.
However, all hope is not lost. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been trying to create a more conducive environment for top players to participate in domestic cricket. By introducing various tweaks to the system, including a revamped domestic calendar, the BCCI is attempting to make it easier for players like Kohli and Rohit to balance their international commitments with their desire to play in domestic games.
Only time will tell if these efforts will bear fruit, but for now, cricket fans can only reminisce about the good old days when Kohli and Rohit used to take the field in a domestic match, inspiring a generation of young cricketers with their mesmerizing skills and dedication to the sport.
