For eight years, David E. Kelley's hit legal drama 'The Practice' captivated audiences with its unique blend of courtroom drama and quirky humor. The show, which aired from 1997 to 2004, followed the lives of a tight-knit group of attorneys working at the law firm Donnell, Young, Dole, and Frutt (later renamed Young, Frutt, and Berluti), as they navigated the complexities of the American justice system.
While the show tackled a wide range of serious topics, including police brutality, medical malpractice, and murder, it was also known for its willingness to push the boundaries of what was considered acceptable on television. This was often achieved by introducing clients with bizarre, humorous, or downright disturbing cases.
One of the show's most memorable clients was a man who genuinely believed he was Superman. Yes, you read that correctly – Superman. Not just a fan of the iconic DC superhero, but an actual, honest-to-goodness believer that he possessed Superman's powers. The firm had their work cut out for them, as they tried to separate their client's delusions from reality in order to provide him with the best possible defense.
Another client took things in a decidedly darker direction, modeling himself after the infamous Hannibal Lecter. For those unaware, Hannibal Lecter is a fictional character in a series of novels by Thomas Harris, a brilliant psychiatrist turned serial killer who also happens to be a connoisseur of fine cuisine – with a penchant for serving human flesh. Needless to say, the attorneys at Donnell, Young, Dole, and Frutt were less than thrilled to be dealing with someone who idolized such an individual.
Perhaps one of the most bizarre cases, however, belonged to a man who had a monkey complex. Rather than simply having a love for primates, the client had an extremely unusual fixation on the creatures – one that bordered on the unsettling. As with many other 'The Practice' cases, this one forced the lawyers to question the limits of sanity and the human condition.
So where can you rewatch 'The Practice'? While the show may not be as widely available as it once was, there are still several options for fans looking to revisit the series. Amazon Prime and Hulu currently have a selection of episodes available to stream, although the majority of these appear to be from later seasons. Your best bet may be to purchase individual episodes or seasons through digital stores like iTunes or Google Play.
For those looking to experience the full 'The Practice' phenomenon, tracking down DVDs of the series could be your best option. Despite the rise of digital streaming, many fans still swear by physical media for their favorite shows – and 'The Practice' is certainly one that lends itself to repeated viewing and discussion.
Whether or not you're a die-hard 'The Practice' fan or simply a newcomer to the world of David E. Kelley, rewatching the show is definitely an experience worth considering. Not only do the cases provide a fascinating glimpse into the human condition, but they also serve as a testament to the power of 'The Practice' to balance humor and drama in one compelling package.
