As a dog trainer and canine behaviourist, Will Atherton has had the pleasure of working with numerous breeds and their owners. With years of experience in the industry, Atherton has developed a deep understanding of what makes each breed tick. However, there's one popular breed in the UK that Atherton would never recommend for families, and that's the Border Collie.
Atherton's decision may come as a shock to some, especially considering the breed's intelligence, loyalty, and high trainability. However, the canine behaviourist believes that the Border Collie's high energy levels and strong herding instincts make them unsuitable for most family homes.
Border Collies were originally bred to herd sheep and other livestock, which requires a tremendous amount of energy and focus. As a result, they have evolved to be highly active dogs that thrive on physical and mental stimulation. While this can be beneficial for experienced owners who can provide the necessary exercise and training, it can be overwhelming for families with young children or those who don't have an active lifestyle.
According to Atherton, the Border Collie's strong herding instincts can also pose a challenge for families. The breed has a natural tendency to herd and chase, which can manifest in unwanted behaviours such as nipping at children's heels or chasing after other pets. If left unchecked, these behaviours can escalate into more serious problems, such as aggression or fear-based behaviours.
Atherton believes that many families underestimate the needs of a Border Collie and are often ill-prepared to provide the necessary care and attention. 'I've seen many families bring home a Border Collie, thinking they'll make great pets, only to realize months later that they're in over their heads,' Atherton explains. 'The Border Collie requires a significant amount of exercise, training, and mental stimulation, which can be difficult to provide, especially for families with busy schedules.'
Despite his reservations about the breed, Atherton is quick to point out that Border Collies can make wonderful pets for the right owner. 'If you're an experienced dog owner or have a large farm with plenty of space to run around, a Border Collie can be a fantastic companion,' he says. 'However, for most families, I would recommend exploring other breeds that are more suited to their lifestyle and needs.'
In conclusion, while the Border Collie may be a popular breed in the UK, it's not necessarily the best fit for most families. With their high energy levels and strong herding instincts, they require a significant amount of care and attention that can be challenging to provide. As a dog trainer and canine behaviourist, Atherton's advice is to carefully consider your lifestyle and needs before bringing home a Border Collie or any other breed, to ensure that you're making the best decision for both you and your pet.
