Former President Donald Trump has long been known for his ability to monetize his fame and latch onto lucrative business ventures.
He has been involved in everything from real estate development to reality television, with a string of eponymous products and endorsements that have become synonymous with his brand.
However, it seems Trump has taken his grifting to new heights with a string of bizarre and questionable schemes in the lead-up to the next election.
From commemorative coins to shady cryptocurrency deals and even a line of fragrances capitalizing on an alleged assassination attempt, it appears there's nothing Trump won't do to make a quick buck.
His latest round of grifting has left even some of his most loyal supporters scratching their heads, and critics are sounding the alarm over the opaque and often absurd nature of his new money-making ventures.
One example of Trump's recent desperation is the rollout of commemorative coins bearing his likeness.
The coins, known as "Trump Cards," are being heavily promoted on social media and through email campaigns, often with misleading or false claims about their value and historical significance.
The idea of collectible coins featuring a head of state or other historical figure is far from new, and some legitimate examples can indeed become highly valuable over time.
However, experts have raised concerns over the legitimacy of Trump's operation, suggesting the former president is cynically preying on his most ardent supporters and selling them little more than overpriced trinkets.
The most clear example of this is the language used to describe the coins.
In promotional materials, the coins are described as "extremely limited edition" and "possibly the most valuable coin ever offered," with promoters carefully avoiding explicit promises of financial returns.
Meanwhile, a representative of the company behind the coins admitted that there's no indication the items will hold any tangible value.
"Even as we make these coins available to the public, we cannot guarantee that they will appreciate in value," the representative said.
Another venture that has critics worried is Trump's partnership with a Bitcoin scam company called "Global Token".
Despite being closely associated with cryptocurrency trading forums and websites for some time now, Global Token has been accused of operating without any discernible value proposition, yet another example of a cryptocurrency scheme capitalizing on the speculative bubble surrounding digital currencies.
If the dubious nature of Global Token wasn't already a cause for concern, things take an even darker turn when examining their relationship with the former President.
If found guilty of promoting the scam cryptocurrency without proper disclaimers, Trump may face serious legal repercussions.
Even aside from financial troubles, using a cryptocurrency scam to fundraise before the next election might seriously hurt Trump's public image.
A public investigation into Donald Trump could severely damage his supporters' willingness to vote for him and lead to further erosion of party credibility.
Trump also announced an exclusive, high-end brand called "Our American Courage." As part of the brand launch, Our American Courage released a unique cologne scent labeled as "Assassination Attempt."
Given the negative reviews of the high-priced cologne, it seems it might not have been a smart idea.
While the news hasn't gotten as much attention as some of Trump's more outlandish controversies, these shady business ventures have quietly caused trouble with voters, who could come back to haunt him in the ballot box.
