The Shocking Moment Dwayne Johnson's Christmas Action Comedys Hits Rock Bottom

November 15, 2024

As the holiday season approaches,a slew of Christmas-themed movies are hitting theaters, each hoping to capture the magic and cheer of the season. Unfortunately, not all of these films are created equal, and some are more likely to leave viewers feeling like lumps of coal. Red One, the latest Christmas action comedy starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, is a case in point.

On paper, Red One sounds like it could be a lot of fun. It brings together two charismatic leading men, both of whom have proven their action chops in previous films. It also promises a unique blend of humor and holiday cheer, which could have made for a genuinely entertaining viewing experience. But as the movie progresses, it becomes clear that something has gone terribly wrong.

One of the biggest problems with Red One is its tone. The film seems to be struggling to find its footing, veering wildly between slapstick humor and high-octane action. While this might sound like an exciting combination, in practice, it comes across as disjointed and confusing. The film's attempts at humor often fall flat, and the action scenes, while competently staged, lack any real sense of tension or urgency.

But the moment when Red One truly hits rock bottom is during a bizarre and inexplicable slap contest scene. Yes, you read that right – a slap contest. It's a sequence that feels like it was lifted straight from a bad 80s comedy, and it's completely at odds with the rest of the film. The scene takes place during Krampusnacht, a festival celebrating the half-goat, half-demon creature of European folklore. It's a clever idea, but the execution is all wrong. Rather than embracing the weirdness of the festival, the film instead tries to shoehorn in a series of awkward humor beats, including the aforementioned slap contest.

It's a shame, because with a bit more focus and discipline, Red One could have been a genuinely fun holiday movie. As it stands, it feels like a missed opportunity – a film that tries to do too many things at once and ends up accomplishing none of them. Even the chemistry between Johnson and Evans, which should be a highlight of the film, feels forced and unnatural.

Overall, Red One is a disappointing and confounding film that fails to deliver on its promise of holiday cheer. Even die-hard fans of Johnson and Evans may find themselves struggling to stay engaged with this messy and inconsistent Christmas action comedy.
