The Shocking True Story of Aurangzeb's Sister: Lust for Power and Betrayal in the Royal Court

November 28, 2024

Roshanara Begum is one of the most fascinating yet lesser-known women in the history of the Mughal Empire. Born to Emperor Shah Jahan and Empress Mumtaz Mahal, Roshanara was a talented poet and a strong-willed woman who lived during a time when women were largely confined to the domestic sphere. However, her life took a dramatic turn when she became embroiled in the intrigue and politics of the royal court.

One such incident where Roshanara demonstrated her cunning was when she foiled a plot by her father, Shah Jahan, and her brother, Dara Shikoh, to assassinate her other brother, Aurangzeb. This was during a time when the Mughal Empire was being ravaged by a bitter struggle for succession. Shah Jahan had chosen Dara Shikoh as his heir apparent, but Aurangzeb had other plans.

Aurangzeb, who was reportedly ruthless and cunning, was not one to take exile quietly. He began gathering support among the nobles and eventually declared himself as the emperor of the Mughal Empire in 1658. However, his ascension was made possible thanks in large part to the interference of his sister, Roshanara. Her loyalty to Aurangzeb guaranteed her place in his court, and soon, she found herself wielding immense power.

After Aurangzeb's ascension to the throne, Roshanara became a force to be reckoned with in the Mughal court. She used her influence and power to sway Aurangzeb's decisions, effectively becoming one of his most trusted advisors. Roshanara, however, also had her own ambitions. Her thirst for power led her to become embroiled in more court politics, making her a formidable opponent for many who crossed her path.

Despite her influence over her brother and her Machiavellian tactics, Roshanara remains somewhat of an enigma. Little is known about her poetry, despite being described as a talented poet. Her personal life also remains somewhat of a mystery, with few accounts of her personal relationships or family life.

The legacy of Roshanara Begum's life remains one of controversy and power. Her role in foiling a plot by Shah Jahan and Dara Shikoh showcases her as a cunning and ruthless player in the game of Mughal politics. Yet, it was that same ruthlessness and cunning that served as her guide when she played an important part in Aurangzeb's eventual ascension to the throne, an event which laid the foundation for her own rise to power.
