After a long hot summer, we’re finally feeling the chill of fall. The leaves are changing colors, the days are getting shorter, and the nights are getting cooler. With the arrival of fall, we know that winter is just around the corner. And with that comes the sad realization that our summer harvest is coming to an end.
So the rush is on to get the last of the apples off the two trees in our yard before frost hits. Yes, you read that right! Our yard is home to not one, but two apple trees that provide us with an abundance of juicy apples every summer. We love having these trees in our yard because they not only provide us with fresh fruit, but they also add to the aesthetic appeal of our yard.
I enlisted the help of my family and friends to pick the last of the apples from the trees. It was a fun-filled day where we got to spend quality time together, enjoy the beautiful fall weather, and collect a bounty of fresh apples.
We started early in the morning, armed with baskets and a ladder, and got to work picking the apples from the trees. The first tree was easy to pick from, as the apples were ripe and ready to fall off the tree. However, the second tree was a bit more challenging, as the apples were higher up and required more effort to reach.
Despite the challenges, we managed to pick a total of three big baskets full of apples. We were all thrilled with our haul and couldn’t wait to enjoy the fruits of our labor. We spent the rest of the day cleaning and sorting the apples, and then deciding how to use them.
We decided to make a variety of apple-based dishes, such as apple pies, apple crisps, and apple sauces. We also canned a few jars of apple sauce to enjoy throughout the winter. And, of course, we couldn’t resist making a few batches of fresh apple cider, which was perfect for sipping on as we sat around the fireplace on a chilly fall evening.
As I reflect on the day’s events, I realize how much I love this time of year. There’s something special about preserving the goodness of summer and enjoying it throughout the year. Whether it’s pickling vegetables, canning jams and jellies, or making pies and crisps, preserving food is a rewarding process that allows us to enjoy the fruits of our labor long after the summer is gone.
