The latest labor force survey by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has uncovered a startling trend in Metro Manila, the country’s economic and political hub. The region has lost the most jobs and created the least employment in July 2024, resulting in a significant increase in the number of jobless Filipinos.
This is a worrying development, particularly for fresh graduates who are entering the labor market. According to the PSA report, Metro Manila—which accounts for a significant portion of the country’s GDP—recorded the highest decline in employment and the lowest number of new job creation in the country.
Experts have linked this trend to a combination of factors, including the ongoing impact of the pandemic, the rising inflation rate, and the shift to automation in various industries. The youth, in particular, are bearing the brunt of this economic downturn, with many struggling to find stable employment.
For recent graduates, the job market has become increasingly uncertain. Many have reported difficulties in securing a job that matches their skills and experience, with some being forced to accept low-paying or part-time work.
The government and private sector are being urged to take immediate action to address this pressing issue. This includes providing training and upskilling programs for young job seekers, as well as implementing policies to encourage job creation in key industries.
As the country’s economic and political hub, Metro Manila should be a source of opportunity and growth for young Filipinos. Instead, the current job market is causing widespread concern among the youth, who are worried about their future and ability to contribute to the country’s economic development.
It remains to be seen how this trend will unfold in the coming months. However, one thing is certain—the government and private sector must work together to address this pressing issue and ensure that young Filipinos have access to the opportunities they deserve.
