The Director of Football Recruitment at Rangers, Nils Koppen, has lifted the lid on the inner workings of the club
Koppen has been at the helm of Rangers recruitment since 2020, playing an instrumental role in shaping the first team and bringing in players who have helped propel the club forward. The Director has opened up about the key qualities the club looks for in a player, and the rigorous process involved in unearthing new talent.
According to Koppen, the club has a multifaceted approach to recruitment. He explained: “We have various sources of information, including videos, data analysis, scouting reports, and personal connections. We then use a combination of these to form a comprehensive picture of a player.
It isn’t just about watching a player score a few goals or make some tackles. We analyze the entirety of their game - their technical ability, tactical awareness, and athleticism. Moreover, we explore their personality, motivation, and willingness to adapt to the demands of our team.
The club has been proactive in identifying and securing young talent, something Koppen attributes to a forward-thinking approach. He stated: “You need to be a step ahead in terms of identifying players’ potential and growth. Our ability to attract and nurture young players has been key in our resurgence as a force in Scottish football.
However, Koppen emphasized that Rangers do not simply focus on bringing in youth. Experience is also crucial to the club’s ethos. “Players with experience can bring stability and maturity to the team. It’s about finding the balance between youth and experience. The dynamic between the two is essential to our success.
As for the role of data analysis, Koppen believes it plays an increasingly important part in identifying potential targets. He said: “Data analysis has allowed us to be more specific in our recruitment process. We use a range of statistics to assess a player’s performance and identify trends in their game.
Despite the progress made in recent years, Koppen remains committed to continually evolving and improving the recruitment process at Rangers. The Director hinted at the introduction of new and exciting strategies to pinpoint emerging talent.
Throughout the interview, Koppen exuded an air of quiet confidence about the future of Rangers. He hinted at a fresh batch of young recruits on the horizon and emphasized the significance of fostering relationships with clubs across Europe to bring about more transfers of the highest calibre.
As Rangers continue to battle for domestic and European honors, fans will be watching with bated breath to see the new talent Koppen and his team have in store. With an envious mix of young and established players, the club looks set to maintain its grip on Scottish football.
