The Vancouver Canucks have been one of the most active teams in the NHL when it comes to making trades, and while some have worked out in their favor, others have been downright disastrous. Tyson Cole of Canucks Army recently took a closer look at some of the worst trades made by the team in recent years, and the results are eye-opening.
One of the most notable trades on the list is the deal that sent Cory Schneider to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for the 9th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. While the pick was used to select Bo Horvat, who has developed into a solid NHL player, the trade is still widely regarded as a mistake. Schneider was a fan favorite in Vancouver and had established himself as one of the top goaltenders in the league, and his departure left a gaping hole in the team’s crease.
Another trade that made the list is the deal that sent Ryan Kesler to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Luca Sbisa, Nick Bonino, and a package of draft picks. While Kesler had become a divisive figure in Vancouver due to his declining production and hefty contract, the return on the trade was underwhelming, to say the least. Sbisa has been a solid depth defenseman, but Bonino has struggled to find consistent playing time, and the draft picks have yet to yield any significant returns.
The trade that sent Jason Garrison to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a 2nd round pick is also widely regarded as a mistake. Garrison had been a solid contributor to the Canucks’ blue line, and his departure left a significant hole on the team’s back end. The 2nd round pick was used to select Guillaume Brisebois, who has yet to establish himself as a regular NHL player.
Perhaps the most egregious trade on the list, however, is the deal that sent Zack Kassian to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Brandon Prust. Kassian had been a promising young player in Vancouver, but his development was hindered by a combination of injuries and off-ice issues. The trade was made in an attempt to shake things up and bring in a veteran presence, but it ultimately backfired. Prust was a non-factor in Vancouver, and Kassian has gone on to establish himself as a solid NHL player in Montreal.
In conclusion, while the Vancouver Canucks have made some savvy trades in recent years, they have also made their fair share of mistakes. The trades listed above are just a few examples of the team’s missteps, and they serve as a reminder that even the best-laid plans can go awry in the world of professional hockey.
