The Asus ROG Tessen is a competitive mobile controller that delivers excellent performance in spite of a few minor frustrations. It may seem like an unusual claim, but the technology behind this mobile controller has been carefully crafted to bring the precision and immersion of PC gaming to mobile devices. Anyone who has had the chance to try the Asus ROG series before knows that this company doesn't mess around when it comes to top-notch gaming products.
The ROG Tessen does have its flaws - a design that's not as sturdy as its non-ROG counterpart and price might take the fun out of the overall experience for many users. However, one cannot ignore the improvements Asus made this time around. Although the key layout has remained largely unchanged, it would've been nice if they experimented a bit more with key placement to allow easier access for important input keys.
In spite of that minor gripe, what we've noticed is that mobile gamers playing FPS titles on their devices were almost always impressed by this controller. When set against actual competitor devices that claim to offer similar abilities for a similar price, the Tessen may come on top due to Asus' premium quality that shows after considerable use.
Even with these great factors taken into consideration, we think the main selling point of this mobile controller is its wireless design and low-latency gameplay experience. You should be aware that this only applies when using wi-fi 6 networks and as such, other users that don't have a stable network have reported experiencing issues. Connecting via Bluetooth 5 may also produce noticeable input lag.
The device offers up to 18 hours of continuous gaming off a single charge of its Li-ion battery, according to Asus. However, in our test we barely reached 11 hours of usage playing with higher to peak input usage and the light turned on, and although some might consider this an excellent score, the huge difference from their claim can be put down to either different testing methodology or a minor issue with their system.
Overall, the combination of its excellent design aesthetic and the substantial gaming performance and wireless abilities that are going head-to-head with its nearest competitor in the gaming niche truly makes this product into a grand design suited to serious gamers looking to bring a full-length gaming terminal experience anywhere on the go.
