Jerry West, affectionately known as "Mr. Clutch" or "The Logo," is one of the most iconic figures in NBA history. As a player, West led the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA Finals nine times and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980. After his playing career, West went on to become a successful executive with the Lakers, playing a key role in the team's dynasty of the 1980s. However, West's relationship with the Lakers was not without its challenges, and his feud with the team was nothing short of petty.
West's troubles with the Lakers began when he was still a player. Despite his incredible on-court success, West felt underappreciated by the team. He was often overshadowed by teammate Elgin Baylor, and his contributions to the team's success were frequently overlooked. This lack of recognition began to take a toll on West, and he eventually became disillusioned with the team.
Things only got worse for West after he retired as a player. Despite his immense success as a player and his desire to stay with the team, West was relegated to a role as a scout for the Lakers. It wasn't until 1982, when new owner Jerry Buss took over the team, that West finally got the recognition he deserved. Buss promoted West to the position of general manager, and West went on to play a crucial role in the team's dynasty of the 1980s.
However, West's feud with the Lakers was far from over. In the 1990s, West became increasingly frustrated with the team's management and the direction the franchise was headed. He clashed with coach Del Harris, and his relationship with the team's front office began to deteriorate. Eventually, West resigned as the team's general manager in 2000.
Despite his feud with the Lakers, West's legacy with the team remains unparalleled. He is still widely regarded as one of the greatest Lakers of all time, and his contributions to the team's success will never be forgotten. However, his relationship with the team will always be complicated, and his experiences serve as a cautionary tale about the often-petty world of professional sports.
