This Situationship Comedy Takes a Dark Turn That Will Leave You Speechless

January 28, 2025

For a movie billed as a relationship comedy — or rather, a “situationship” comedy, as modern-day dating arrangements go — writer-director Sophie Brooks’ “Oh, Hi!” starts off rather ominously, with the movie spoiling its own shift in tone that would kick in later. Eerie music plays as we take in the deeply concerned face and emotions of the main characters, setting the stage for what is expected to be a light-hearted exploration of love and relationships in today’s world.

Despite the initial ominous tone, the movie does attempt to balance its darker themes with comedic elements, thanks in large part to the terrific cast led by Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman. The chemistry between the leads is undeniable, and their performances are the main reason to keep watching, even when the story takes a turn for the worse.

The problem with “Oh, Hi!” lies in its inability to fully commit to its darker themes, instead opting for a watered-down version of a modern-day “Misery.” The result is a movie that feels like it’s trying to have its cake and eat it too, without fully satisfying either the comedic or dramatic aspects of the story. The shift in tone that was hinted at in the beginning is jarring, to say the least, and it’s unclear whether the movie wants to be a commentary on the dangers of obsession or simply a lighthearted rom-com.

Despite these flaws, the cast of “Oh, Hi!” does their best to elevate the material, with Gordon and Lerman delivering standout performances. The Supporting cast also adds to the movie’s charm, even if their characters feel underdeveloped at times. The real issue lies in the writing and direction, which struggle to find a consistent tone and ultimately fail to deliver a satisfying payoff.

In the end, “Oh, Hi!” feels like a missed opportunity to explore the complexities of modern relationships in a meaningful way. While it’s not a complete failure, thanks to the efforts of its talented cast, it’s hard to shake the feeling that this movie could have been something more. As it stands, it’s a middling situationship comedy that fails to leave a lasting impression.
